As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
